Making Incongruous Images

Incongruous - [in-kong-groo-uhs]

–adjective

1.
out of keeping or place; inappropriate; unbecoming: an incongruous effect; incongruous behavior.
2.
not harmonious in character; inconsonant; lacking harmony of parts: an incongruous mixture of architectural styles.
3.
inconsistent: actions that were incongruous with their professed principles.

Incongruous images are often used in advertisements and in movies -- think special effects -- attention-getting and amusing.

Examples of incongruous images:

  • A guy you know puts on a mask that gives him the face of a monster, or of Adam Sandler, or of President Obama. (Not what you expect to see!)
  • Shopping for groceries, you pick up a head of lettuce and notice that this head has facial features.
  • The body of a movie character who nibbles on a magic doughnut gradually becomes that of an elephant.
  • A car going past you doesn't have wheels.  Instead, it has the legs of an elephant.

Assignment Part 1: Incongruous Image With Human Parts

Directions: Your assignment is to find images that you can take parts from and put them together to form new images. This will be the final project for all of your work with layer masks and clipping masks. You must combine an image that contains a portion of a human figure with a portion of a different human. If you put a new head on a body you must choose and position the head so that it looks like it could have grown from that body. Its size, color, texture, and placement must look compatible with the body.

Assignment Part 2: Incongruous Image With  Human Parts and non-human parts

Directions: Your assignment for part 2 is similar to part 1, except you must combine an image of a human with that of a non-human.  Examples would be: an animal, some type of inanimate object, etc.

Assignment Part 3: Incongruous Image With ONLY non-human parts

Directions: Your assignment for part 3 is similar to part 2, except you must combine images of non-human parts. That means you cannot use humans in your image at all.

Deadline: beginning of class Friday, March 25 - we will view projects during class.

Please note: part of your grade for this project is how believable your images are.  Please spend time blending and refining edges, using the dodge/burn tools, changing or manipulating color, etc. to make your images look realistic.

  2. Funniest image
  3. Saddest or most tragic image.
